Main functions are to;

-Educate/ inform

-Persuade

-entertain/ occupy

I have chosen journalism, specifically in the realm of sport. The reasoning behind me discussing journalism is because I enjoy the freedom on which you can discuss topics, particularly educating/informing people. even if not educating, contributing to changing social attitudes and would give me a sense achievement.

genres of journalism

journalism types vary massively. for example TV and newspaper journalism varies massively.

some techniques used in newspapers

– Images
– Layout
– Font size (emphasis placed on something in particular i.e. headings)
– Font style
– Double spacing
– Horizontal print
– Vertical print

essentially, you are trying to entice people to your writing regardless of if its to persuade, educate or entertain. this means you need ways of doing so. most journalists do this through

opinion ariticle –  usually intended to entertain or possibly inform when the writer purely expressives his opinion of any given subject in the article he writes.Common sytle of jounalism.

This is a story like little else in sport. It is a saga spanning the 17-year career of the world’s most famous rugby player. Jonny Wilkinson has been driven by a relentless quest for improvement and the impossibility of perfection both on and off the field. He now has only two games left to play. On Saturday, in Cardiff, Wilkinson will lead Toulon, the defending European champions, in the Heineken Cup final against Saracens. He turns 35 on Sunday and then, six days later, in his last match as a professional player, he is due to captain Toulon in the French championship decider against Castres in Paris.

within this opinion article there are many features within, for example semantic field. A semantic field is found within all pieces of journalism as it conveys the theme and topic of the article. It also can convey it’s purpose to the audience, for example within boxing, if a fighter is being quoted and they are using lexis such as “scrap, brawl and fight” as opposed to “Bout” it conveys a much greater aggressive tone, the same is found in this extract. The words “Relentless”, “Improvement” and “Perfection” tell us that writer is mainly discussing the grit and determination that Jonny Wilkinson has and has proved through his life.

at the start of the article, the writer uses the phrase ‘this is a story like little else in sport’ this is an example of exclamatory sentence mood, the over emphasis is solely used in the first section as a device of enticement, this increases the likelihood someone would feel the urge to read further. this could be the difference between having an audience or not, and acts as a embracing opening.

It’s an iPhone for people who can’t be arsed holding an iPhone up to their face. A slightly-further-away iPhone that keeps your lap warm. A weird combination of portable and cumbersome: too small to replace your desktop, too big to fit in your pocket, unless you’re a clown. It can play video, but really – do you want to spend hours staring at a movie in your lap? Sit through Lord of the Rings and you’d need an osteopath to punch the crick out of your neck afterwards. It can also be used as an ebook, something newspapers are understandably keen to play up, but because it’s got an illuminated display rather than a fancy non-backlight “digital ink” ebook screen, it’ll probably leave your eyes feeling strained, as though your pupils are wearing tight shoes.
